The Right Way To Diet

So many people are constantly in the process of trying to lose weight and with the abundance of different types of diets and dieting books or plans that are out on the market it can be hard to know what kind of diet is the right one to follow and which one will help you really lose weight in the long run. Dieting is difficult for even the most discipline of people so the best way to choose a diet is to make sure you’re picking one that will work for you and for your lifestyle. If you’re a vegan don’t just go after a high protein diet that will require you to eat pounds of steak and bacon constantly. That simply isn’t going to work. And if you have a gluten intolerance then you aren’t going to want to go after a diet that promotes lots of carbs and bread products. Pick carefully when it comes to dieting because you don’t want to dedicate yourself to a diet that isn’t going to work for you and end up quitting because it will only make you feel bad about yourself in the long run. Make sure that your diet is going to work for you.

You also want to be sure that your diet will work for your specific needs and will address whatever issues you have that are causing you to gain weight. If you have problems with overeating then you’ll want to look at a diet that has a calorie control aspect but if you have a problem with sugary or salt foods then you’ll want a diet that controls those. If your cholesterol is bad or you know you’re at risk for heart disease then you’ll want to cu back on meat and fatty foods because those will increase your problems in that are. Pick a diet that is going to serve your unique needs and don’t just go with whatever happens to be trendy at the time because it won’t do you near as much good as something that you’ve picked out for yourself based on your own eating habits and your preferences.

When dieting you also want to make sure that you have concrete goals that will serve you as you work towards your ideal weight. Goals that measure things like pounds lost or how many days in a row you stayed on track with your eating plan or worked out or some other kind of measurable behavior. I don’t recommend going with pounds lost because that can be really frustrating and it’s difficult to control. A lot of times you might actually be losing weight but gaining muscle when you're working out so the scale might not be moving like you want it to. Instead make a point of measuring how many fruits and vegetables you ate (see our other articles for help with that) or how many times you went to the gym or took the dog for a walk. Things like that will boos your confidence because you’re working with positive numbers (how many times you did something as opposed to not doing something) and it’s a lot more fun to track and reward yourself this way.

It can also be really helpful to have a friend that’s working a diet with you so that you can keep each other motivated and working hard towards your goals in a way that will inspire you both to stick to your diets until you’ve accomplished what you want with them. Friends are great this way because you can complain to each other and talk each other down when you’re ready to break open the vending machine for a candy bar or yo think you might die if you aren’t able to have a slice of cheesecake. Things like this can be hard and much easier to give into if you're trying to go it alone but if you have someone to work through it with you then you’re much much more likely to be able to follow through on the goals and the commitments you made. It’s a bit harder to do this with a spouse unless you have the same goals because they’ll probably be on a very different kind of diet than you are and it can be frustrating to watch someone eat what you’re craving when you aren’t allowed to have any or to be able to run an extra ten mile farther than you can. Save yourself the stress and find someone that’s on a similar diet path to you.

Make sure that your diet works for the right reasons for you. Dieting to an unhealthy or sickly weight is only going to do your body a lot of damage and it can take years to recover from the problems we can create for ourselves with just a few months of dieting. It’s also important to realize that dieting doesn’t mean not eating. Dieting means eating more of the foods that are health for you and less of the ones that aren’t healthy it doesn't meant that you stop eating completely all for the sake of losing a few pounds. If you are out of shape then head to the gym and focus on a natural and healthy diet of mostly fruits and vegetables. Talk to your doctor about what weight is right for you and find someone that works for you personally. Make sure that you aren’t dieting to solve problems with body mage because that won’t do you any good either. Take other measures to feel good about yourself and don’t start a dieting or exercising regimen until you’re certain it’s for a good reason.

Overall dieting doesn’t have to be that hard unless you make it that way so follow the advice above and soon you’ll be looking and feeling great!
