Organic Food
In this day and age it has become very popular to eat organic food and to purchase only produce and other foods that are in the most natural state one can manage to acquire. Part of this is a healthy eating fad that has been kicking around the country for the past few years but a lot of it is also that the way we grow, harvest, deliver, sell, and eat our food has completely changed. There are a lot more people in the world and that means more food needs to be distributed and produced. For a lot of farmers this means that they rush to satisfy the growing demand which means that a larger yield of crops is absolutely necessary and since its difficult to produce crops as it is that means farmers turn to methods like pesticides and herbicides to ensure that they’ll have a big enough crop to meet the demands of the public. Part of the problem with all this excess farming is the overuse of resources, the depletion of nutrients in the soil but by and far the worst aspect of it is all the chemicals that are used to keep bugs away and to encourage plants to grow bigger and faster. These chemicals are washed into streams, rivers and lacks, end up in the soil, are even consumed by local wildlife and eventually end up in our bodies when we eat the fruit and vegetables they are put on. It’s alarming to find out that the average piece of produce in the grocery store contains over thirty different chemicals on it and that a lot of that stays in our system residually but even with this knowledge there is still some debate over whether or not organic is really the way to go.
A lot of people decide against buying organic because of the belief that there really isn’t much of a difference but the level of chemical residue is nonexistent and the nutrients that organic foods contains are fifty percent more than are contained in conventionally farmed food which means that not only are you skipping the nasty chemicals when you choose organic you’re also boosting the value of your food by an additional half. Some people however think that’s just too expensive to buy organic food but when you factor in the cost of future medical bills that can ensue it’s worth the extra spare change upfront to purchase organic food. The constant exposure to toxic chemicals can lead to a whole myriad of medical and health concerns down the road.
Plus organic food can change a lot of aspects of your health in a very good way if you decide to switch over to organic food for a continued period of time. Eating organically can help you lose weight, can suppress cravings for processed sugary food, and can prevent you from overeating. Plus organic foods can encourage you to take control of you health in other areas of your life and can lead to a more holistic and “organic” lifestyle overall. So while the jury may still be out when it comes to organic food it never hurts to do the best you can for your body.
