Home Grown Food
One of the best and easiest ways you can go about making healthy food choices is to take on the challenge of growing some of your food on your own at home. When you grown your own food at home you are put in control of what kind of food you decide to produce, how you grow it, what comes in contact with it and so forth. That means you’re able to be certain that no chemicals or pesticides were used on your plants if you don’t want them used, you can make sure that you’re growing varieties of plants that have lots of nutrients in them, and of course you’ll know that your food has traveled only a few feet to get to your home. All of these are great reasons to begin growing food in your own home but there are plenty more.
When you grow food at home as opposed to just heading down to the local grocery store you are much more involved with the processes of your food than you would be otherwise. You’re choosing in advance what you want to grow, taking care of it and helping it along yourself, and you’re also the one that goes through the effort of harvesting it and cooking with it. It teaches you to value and appreciate your food that much more and it also helps you understand what kind of an effect the growing of food has on the environment. Plus home grown food will completely change the opinion you have on how food is meant to taste. Food that is grown right in your own backyard, especially food that is grown organically and from high quality seeds or plants, tastes entirely different from genetically modified food that has been sprayed with dozens of chemicals, picked before it was ripe, and then shipped hundreds of miles to get to your local grocery store. The difference in taste and in quality is huge and once you’ve gotten into the habit of eating such yummy home grown foods it can be hard to go back to the bland and boring store varieties.
There are a lot of other benefits to growing your own food at home. When you’re eating home grown food you’re eating more naturally and making healthier choices. You’ll be eating lots of vegetables and some fruit and this can save you from the temptation to buy french fries or potato chips and try to pass those off as your daily serving of vegetables. When you eat at home you’re able to enjoy your fresh produce and it encourages you to eat more vegetables and fruits than you might normally which is a very big step in the direction of a healthy diet. Plus as you’re eating all these foods that are good for you and revamping your diet you’re also likely to save a fair amount of money. Gas and chemicals are expensive so the produce in the store you buy is going to be a great deal pricier than what you can grow in your own backyard which means you get to save your pennies and eat better too. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!
