Giving Up Coffee

Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverage in the western world and there’s good reason for it to. It’s a stimulant and it’s a part of our modern culture here so there are few people who haven’t had a cup of coffee at some point in their life. There’s a lot of debate over whether or not coffee is good for you and much of that comes from its popularity as of late as a “health” drink because of some of the antioxidants it contains. When it really comes down to it though, pretty much anything that is plant based has some antioxidants in it which means that it can be called a health drink. The truth of the matter is that there is little in coffee that is good for you and since so much of the coffee we currently drink is made with tons of sugar and milk it’s even worse for you.

If you aren’t sure if you’re addicted to coffee or if you need to give it up try this: stop drinking it. If you have withdrawal symptoms like a headache, irritability, anxiety, pains of any kind and so forth then you’ve probably formed an addiction to it which isn’t healthy. Coffee, being a stimulant can also have some dangerous properties aside from the addictiveness of the caffeine in it. It can cause you to be jumpy and on edge and it can even be enough to trigger heart murmurs or palpitations. Coffee is also a natural diuretic which means it can’t help but eliminate magnesium, sodium, and potassium from your body leaving you without these essential minerals.

Ultimately coffee isn’t the best thing to be putting in your body and the only way to remove these effects is to cut it out of your diet completely. It can be difficult to do this especially if you attempt to do it cold turkey each time. Instead try to slowly phase it out and use supplements and natural herbs to help you do it. You’ll want to supplement with magnesium because it’s the body’s natural energizer and it can help keep you from feeling tired or sleepy when you’re removing the coffee buzz from your day. It’s also calming because it relaxes your adrenaline instinct so it can help get rid of the nervous coffee jitter and treat insomnia. It’s also really helpful to find something to sort of wean yourself off of coffee with. A lot of people use black tea to achieve this and try drinking that for a couple of weeks and then slowly switching to green tea and then slowly leaving that out for just water. Once you’ve got that set up and you have more magnesium in your system you’ll be much better off and have a way easier time quitting. Ultimately it’s going to be best for your health if you are able to leave behind drinking coffee and the sooner you do it the better so just take the jump and do your best. It’s ok if you aren’t able to completely give it up the first time - just keep trying and soon you’ll be off it completely. Good luck!
